Tech Tips
===============================================================
How do I use long-range wireless technology? Long-range wireless technology
is useful when you are out of your home or office. There are several
varieties that are used today, and for starters I will discuss the Palm.NET
service. This service is built into the Palm VII, VIIx and the new i705
handhelds. This service requires a monthly service plan that includes a set
amount of data transfer. In return for this service you can use Web clipping
applications see http://www.palmflying.com/cgi-bin/pfsearch.cgi?ss=PQ001 for
a listing. This service can be used while flying in an aircraft (VFR), but
is limited to service areas covered by the Palm.NET service.
Next, mobile phones can be used to download information while on the go. Some
of the newer mobile phones have built-in IRDA and/or Bluetooth (see May issue)
that allow you to easily connect to your mobile device. If you have an older
device it can be connected via a cable. Standard mobile phones can NOT be
used in an aircraft when airborne.
Finally, there are new satellite phones starting to emerge that can be used
while the aircraft is airborne. Satellite phones can be used for both voice
and data services, see http://www.anywheremap.com/pages/awm_anywherewx.htm
for a sample application that uses this functionality.
Tip: If you have questions about this technology, feel free to post a
new forum message to http://www.palmflying.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=hard
