Tech Tips
===============================================================
As technology improves and new hardware is released we are going to start
seeing alternate handheld aviation technology. Cell phones and other connected
devices are going to become more popular as applications start to appear. We
are just now starting to see phones that have built-in Java run-times and
programmable operating systems (OS). This means developers can write Java
based programs that run on your phone. There have already been logbooks and
E-6B's that have been developed for these technologies.
In the past we have seen WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) enabled devices,
this technology allowed developers to write simple programs that modern
cell-phones could read. Most newer cell phones provide this WAP support.
See the links below for information on a couple of aviation based WAP pages.
- WAP aviation weather - http://smsavantaj.com/weather/index.shtml
The newer phones that have embedded Java as well as the Symbian OS will
allow you to view animated Doppler, METAR, TAF's and much more.
- Java based aviation weather - http://www.my-cast.com
Some of the newer phones such as Sony Ericsson P800 support both Java and WAP
and have been marked as "flight-safe mode" devices. This means that the phone
can be turned on during flight and will not interfere with on-board electronics
of the aircraft, see article, http://www.cellular-news.com/story/8778.shtml
We will keep you updated as this technology changes and becomes easier to use.
Tip: If you have questions about this technology, feel free to post a
new forum message to http://www.palmflying.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=hard
