News: SAS First To Execute Green Approaches
Posted by Matthew Justice on Jan 6, 2008Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) has claimed to be the first European carrier to commence transatlantic green flights by recently concluding Europe's first commercial transatlantic "green approach" using a continuous descent approach. For those unfamiliar with this approach, basically it is an approach that helps reduce fuel burn and noise. The approach involves maintaining a constant 3 degree angle during descent by throttling back the engine(s).
Flying in an Airbus A330, the airline flew from New York's Newark (EWR) airport to Stockholm Arlanda airport using a continuous descent approach. This method is estimated to save approximately 150kg of aircraft fuel and 470kg of carbon dioxide during the transatlantic flight.
SAS also offers the ability for passingers to purchase credits to offset emissions.
