News: Politicians Seeking To Criminalize In-Flight Calling
Posted by Matthew Justice on Apr 23, 2008Two politicians are proposing a new house bill called the HANG UP Act, that would make it illegal to engage in voice calls while the airplane is in the air.
Rep. Peter DeFazio and Rep. Jerry Costello, both Democrats, argued that the American public despises the idea of in-flight calling. Their bill, however, would allow passengers the ability to use cell phones for Internet and messaging use (such as text messaging and email).
Talking on cell phones on an airplane is currently limited to when the plane is at the gate or taxiing after landing. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has already put the idea of in-flight calling on indefinite hold. The HANG UP Act proposes to make it permanently illegal in the United States.
