News: The EU Spending $2.5B In Green Flight and Aviation Technologies
Posted by Matthew Justice on Feb 29, 2008The European Union is partnering with the European aerospace industry to provide a 1.6B Euro ($2.4BUSD) research project grant to explore innovative technologies, including alternative fuel aircraft. The project is being dubbed the "Clean Sky" Initiative.
This initiative is an industry driven 7-year research program to plan for a greener generation of transportation that will radically improve impact on the environment while strengthening and securing European aeronautics industry's competitiveness.
They will focus on six technology platforms including: Green Regional Aircraft, SMART Fixed-Wing Aircraft, Green Rotorcraft, Sustainable Green Engines, Systems for Green Operations, and ECO Design practices.

- 50% reduction of CO2 emissions through drastic reduction of fuel consumption
- 80% reduction of NOx emissions
- 50% reduction of external noise
- A green design, manufacturing, maintenance and disposal product life cycle
