News: The 4,000 MPH Passenger Jet, Can It Happen?
Posted by Matthew Justice on Feb 14, 2008Reaction Engines is working on a new Mach 5 engine capable of both supersonic and subsonic flight and is powered by liquid hydrogen. The new concept aircraft being shown is being called the A2 Mach 5 Civil Transport and will using a new technology called Long-Term Advanced Propulsion Concepts and Technologies (LAPCAT).
The airplane will have an exceptional range (approx 20,000 km both subsonic and supersonic) and is therefore able to service a large number of routes whilst simultaneously avoiding supersonic (loud) overflight of populated areas. This speed and range will greatly reduce journey times to 4.6 hours compared to a current 22 hour trip.
